Fall 2003 Student Loan Workshop

We Bring You the Latest Updates In the Financial Aid Industry

The RIHEAA Student Loan Workshop™ will give you and your colleagues the most recent information about the issues affecting your role in assisting students.

Topics of Discussion:

RIHEAA update

In the news — Policy and regulatory update and federal application-processing changes. This session will help you understand what changes have been made to the financial-aid delivery system, provide the latest information about new and proposed regulations, and share the current word about the upcoming reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.

The new horizon — Technology for the financial aid administrator. What's next for today's financial aid administrators — a paperless financial aid office? Well, not quite yet, but in recent years the Department of Education, along with many of its community partners, has greatly enhanced the awarding, disbursing and reporting processes of federal financial-aid programs. This session will take a look at a number of the software products that are currently available to assist today's financial-aid administrators in their daily routine.

Paying for college — Advising parents and students. This session will assist you in advising students and parents about how to pay for college, including the various options available before, during and after students obtain their postsecondary education. Topics will include saving for college, tax benefits of student loans and bankruptcy of student-loan borrowers.

Professional judgment and verification — Key considerations. Professional judgment is a topic of interest to many financial aid administrators. During this session, we will discuss when and why professional judgment is appropriate as well as performing verification when professional judgment is exercised. We also will cover case studies related to professional judgment and verification.
